Although the love of patchwork and piecing is highly visible in the modern quilting movement, appliqué holds equal potential for creating stunningly modern quilts. This lecture focuses on some stylistic features of modern appliqué, illustrating works by some of the leading proponents of this technique and style. In addition, Casey describes the process of creating some of her own modern appliqué quilts, including Apiary, her first large quilt, which was exhibited at the inaugural Quilt Con in 2013. Although she often uses a computer to design her quilts, Apiary was designed entirely by hand, and this lecture demonstrates how Casey's signature style of composite appliqué quilts can be achieved by anyone with a Sharpie and a photocopier.
